While I loved the fact that we were moving into our own home, I absolutely, positively hate moving. The packing, loading, unloading, unpacking, I hate it all.
Our previous moves usually involved someone getting hurt or something getting broken. I was hoping this move we be pretty smooth...I think I jinxed us.
Our problems started when I reserved the moving truck. Not even an hour after I reserved it the truck rental office called me back to let me know that they did not have the truck we reserved available for the date we needed it. (That would have been nice to know when I made the reservation) So they decided they were just going to give us a larger truck for no extra cost since it was their mistake. No problem, I can live with that.
So we go to pick up the larger truck on the morning of our move. IT WON'T START! Not exactly how I wanted to kick off this day. So, at this point they decide to just give us the truck we initially reserved and find something else for the person coming to pick up the truck we were leaving in before they arrived later that afternoon. (If that makes any sense)
So we start loading the truck. This part ends up taking much longer than we expected because Nicholas was apparently in no mood to move. He wanted nothing to do with his toys, his books, nothing. At one point I tried to give his Mickey Mouse toy, which is one of his favorites, and he threw it across the room. He would not let me put him down.
12 hours later, we are finally loading up the last few things into the truck and my husband needs help loading the washer and dryer. Nicholas had finally fallen asleep so we started loading them up. The dryer went into the truck easily, no problems whatsoever. The washer apparently had other ideas. It wasn't going without a fight and by then our energy and the strength of our backs had been seriously depleted.
Long story short, the washer started to tip off of the dolly, I wasn't strong enough to catch it, my husband was on the wrong side and couldn't do anything and the washing machine fell on the car. Yep, you read that right, it tipped off the dolly that was on the moving truck ramp and fell onto the car. (In case you were wondering, the car was next to the ramp because we had to pull the truck in at an angle to keep it out of the street and that street is so narrow that cars aren't allowed to be parked on it)
So now we have a nice dent and scratch in the front passenger side of the car that needs to be fixed. Oh well, that can wait a few days.
By the time we got to the new house it was a little after midnight. Saturday morning we got up and unloaded the truck. It is definitely easier taking things off a truck then trying to pack them onto it.
Again we had more problems with the moving truck as we tried to return it at the end of the evening. The office we were supposed to return it to was closed, they closed about 5 minutes before we found their office actually, and we couldn't find a drop box for the keys.
An hour later after speaking with corporate customer service and finally finding a number posted for the office owner, he led us to his drop box behind the building in the alley, which was completely pitch black dark. Yeah it makes complete sense to me to have an after hours drop box in the middle of a dark alley. Yeah.
Sunday was pretty uneventful. We unpacked, painted, moved furniture and put things back together. Although I am no where near being completely unpacked, I am making a little progress each day.
So far we are loving the new house. Our only issue so far has been the utilities. If you follow me on Twitter you may have heard my rants about this yesterday, but we woke up yesterday with no electricity. Not a huge problem since very little in our house runs on electricity. Our heat, stove and hot water heat all run off gas.
About 20 minutes after we woke up the electricity came back on, before going right back off. It went on like this for about 2 hours. They get it back on for a few seconds and then it shuts off again. They finally fixed the problem around 9:00a.m. and I started unpacking.
Nicholas watched as I unpacked boxes yesterday and other than the fact that a lot of our stuff is still in boxes, our routine pretty much returned to normal yesterday. That is until about 3:30 in the afternoon.
The high temperature yesterday was in the mid 30s. Around 3:30 I noticed that it was getting a bit cold in the house but chalked it up to the fact that it was 33 degrees outside and would soon be getting dark. I turned the heat up a few degrees and continued unpacking.
By 4:00 the house was even colder. I checked the thermostat and at 60 degrees and dropping it was feeling a little bit chilly. At this point I tried to use the kitchen sink to wash out Nick's bottle...no water. It dawned on me, the gas was shut off.
In this small town, the city takes care of water, sewer, gas and trash. We had all of our paper work turned in last week and they were just waiting for the old owner to sign the papers to take the account our of her name, so I knew we hadn't forgotten anything. The lady at the city even told us it wouldn't be shut off it would just be transferred to our name.
Guess they were wrong because it was cold. After searching for a half hour I finally found their after hours number which actually just connected me to the fire department. The fire chief informed that yes, the fact that it was 30 degrees outside, we had no heat and a baby lived in the house, this did constitute an emergency call. So 10 minutes later the fire chief was at my house turning the gas back on.
The last few days have been eventful to say the least. Hopefully I'll have some pictures for you later this week.
What have all of you been up to?
