What an amazing feeling it is to have a doctor actually listen to what I have to say. To actually THINK about what I am telling him and understand that I spend 24 hours a day with my child and know him better than anyone.
If you couldn't tell, we met with Nicholas' new doctor today and I didn't realize just how miserable we were visiting the old doctor until I met this one today. He was amazing!! He listened to everything I had to say, every last detail starting from birth to now and took notes while I was talking. When I was finally finished explaining the struggles we have been through from switching formulas, determining the correct medication dosages and the off the wall things the former pediatrician had us trying for his allergic reactions, he immediately set to work examining Nicholas, asking questions and laying out the care plan that would work best for Nicholas. (Not what would work best for just the issues he has but what would work best for Nicholas specifically.) Our last pediatrician wouldn't have ever thought of that. Everything he did was cookie cutter. The diagnosis, the medication dosages, everything was based on what other children his age were receiving not what he needed as an individual.
I can't believe it took us this long to find this doctor but now that we have we will not be going back. In total, Nicholas and I spent a little over an hour in his office today and we cut back on a lot of the products and medications the former doc has us using and I truly think it is for the best. He also didn't waste any time confronting Nicholas' reflux issue. Most of the time it seems as though we take two steps forward and one step back. Today was really no different and while we have definitely made some progress, it is slow going at best.
Even taking his current reflux medications, my little man has once again started spitting and throwing up some. Nothing compared to 3-4 months ago but still. While taking his measurements today the nurse noticed that once again he lost a little bit of weight. Not a ton, but its something they want to continue to monitor. Either way I feel like we have taken a huge step. The last 5 months have been one roller coaster ride after another and looking back we should have just gotten off. Even though we have only had one appointment with this physician, it already feels like smooth sailing.

so what is this drs plan of action? I feel like we FINALLY got somewhere with Brycen's last dr visit. He is MUCH happier, and now I can tell the difference between a normal fussy baby, and the reflux acting up and I can act accordingly. It is amazing the difference! It's so nice when you have a dr that listens - we may be ftm but we know our baby and know when something is wrong. I never really believed in mothers intuition/instinct until I had Brycen! Good luck with everything.
ReplyDeleteJilean, right now we are monitoring his reflux symptoms and keeping track of when they are acting up and when they are at their worst to see if there is something triggering it. The doc thinks that we may need to adjust the reflux medication dosages since he constantly growing and figure out what all of his allergies are. (He seems to have quite a few now) He wants to see if some of his reflux is triggered by the allergic reactions he has been having and he wants to talk with a couple of allergists to see about doing a 6 month allergy test. So far that is what we have but it seems like we got more out of one appointment with this doctor than we had seeing the last one for almost 5 months.
